Jefferson Prep Launches Effort for Developing Micro-Schools in Haiti

Jefferson Prep seeks to assist with the educational component of Haiti's reconstruction
Jefferson Prep, a renowned leader in exam preparation and tutoring services, today announced a long-term effort to assist with the reconstruction of micro-schools in Port-au-Prince and throughout Haiti. 

"We are pleased to continue our commitment to the post-2011 reconstruction of Haiti," said Jefferson Prep President Richard Bahar"and we feel that the education sector has been ignored."  

Thus far, efforts to aid in the reconstruction of Haiti have concentrated on basic infrastructure.  Although this infrastructure was indeed devastated by the earthquake, reconstruction efforts - particularly under the auspices of the Clinton efforts - have focused on macro-reconstruction.
Support has not been has extensive, regrettably, for small businesses and schools.  For over 2 years, Jefferson Prep has lead efforts in the Washington DC area to galvanize financial support by small businesses for victims of the Haiti earthquake.  This began with our "Georgetown
for Haiti" effort immediately after the earthquake.  Since then, we have worked with our colleagues to transition from triage/disaster relief to long-term micro-reconstruction.  Because of our dedication to education, we feel that we can best contribute by assisting with the reconstruction
of Haiti's education sector.

The most component of this effort will involve developing micro-schools which can be quickly and affordably spread across Haiti.  Each micro-school would accommodate no more than 30 students in small, mobile units which are both affordable and disaster-resistant.  Furthermore,
maintaining a small size would be ideal for learning purposes.  Before the earthquake, as in much of the developing world, Haitian students were crammed into large classrooms - usually at different academic levels.  This formula would permit a smaller teacher to student ratio, and
a more conducive learning experience with students divided according to aptitude and academic level.

Jefferson Prep is inviting institutional and corporate partners to assist us with developing this effort.  A fundraiser is tentatively planned for May of 2013 in Washington DC.
